Boston has always been a leader in the meCommerce / mass customization industry. Way back in 1996, there was a little company called Vistaprint that helped paved the way for many other companies in this sector. Today, Vistaprint is a publicly traded company based in Lexington with a market cap of $1B+.
Boston is now the home to several innovative companies where consumers hold the power and control... like Gemvara, FashionPlaytes, CustomMade, & Blank Label.
Open Runway is another exciting company that falls into this category. By using their robust application, you can design your own handbags & wallets... and then have your creation shipped to you, so you can wear it and show it off to all of your friends. You can also design your own shoes, however the ability to have them produced is coming shortly.
Started by local entrepreneurs, Monika Desai & Eric Estabrooks, the ultimate goal for Open Runway is to be the "go to" destinatoin website for DYO (design your own) women's fashion. So, in the future, you will see other fashion items like apparel, accessories, etc.
The site will also feature two types of community-voted Design Challenges. The first is where shoppers can submit their design into a themed design challenge for a chance to win a prize or merchandise credits. The second contest is where up and coming fashion designers can submit original designs. Winning designs will actually be sold on Open Runway where customers can make them their own. The winner of these designs will get a bigger cash prize or residuals off of sales.
