It’s not every day that a startup from New Hampshire gets the help from a rap icon to promote their company. Yes, that is exactly the support that a startup called 1Mind is getting from Hammer (formerly known as MC Hammer).
1Mind is a social discovery app to find new friends and share with like-minded people. It is the brainchild of Derek Dodge. The idea behind 1Mind came about while Derek was attending the University of New Hampshire. He thought about how people build friendships while they are in college. Most of your friends were classmates within your major or people that you met through serendipitous encounters in a social setting.
But, what about all the other students on campus? It’s quite possible that there are many, many more people that have a lot more in common with you. Yet, how do you go about finding these people across a campus with over 15,000 students?
Derek and his brother, Darren Dodge, set out to start building 1Mind about 2 years ago. They raised $500K in seed funding from eCoast Angels, 10X Venture Partners, and their father, Don Dodge (Developer Advocate at Google, startup advisor and investor).
1Mind works across mobile (iOS, Android) and desktop browsers. When you first login, you need to take a personality test and the 1Mind Likeness algorithm determines your compatibility ranking with other members. After taking the test, my personality was deemed as “The Helper” which I felt was accurate.
After your personality test, you are encouraged to play games where you vote “Yes” or “No” on various topics like movies, music, and pop culture. And just like on Netflix or Pandora, the more you vote, the more complete your compatibility profile will be with other members of the community.
The Discover feature is where you are able to find and connect with other like-minded people. You will see a variety of 1Mind members that are ranked based on your compatibility. 1Mind said I was 78% compatible with eCoast Angels investor, George McQuilken…, who knew?
Hammer is a longtime family friend of the Dodge’s. He also cares deeply about connecting people and helping them find common ground. Having access to Hammer’s 3.2M followers on Twitter is certainly a level of promotion help that any startup would appreciate.
They are also launching a specific compatibility test to see how you rank with Hammer. Hammer is quoted as saying “Now more than ever, we need to come together and focus on what we have in common. I am inviting everyone to join 1Mind to see what they have in common with me, and discover people all over the world who share their unique interests.” It turns out that Hammer and I are 64% alike. Hammer and I exchanged emails yesterday about this story and who knows... maybe we are on the path to a long lasting friendship?
This isn’t the first startup for Dodge brothers, as they previously launched a social networking site for nightlife called AboutLastNight.com. This site is still in operation, however 100% of their time is dedicated to the success of 1Mind.
